I agree. The Pentateuch came from a much different time though. I try to understand it in the context of Canaanite culture from the 8th century BCE. Richard Friedman Elliot has some great books that illuminate this subject and offer better understanding of the books in their context. I also just bought a new book on the subject by John Barton called A History of the Bible.
