The LDS church encourages all members and potential converts to follow Moroni’s promise in Moroni 10:4–5. They are encouraged to read the Book of Mormon and then ask God if it is true. Missionaries then tell people that all the other truth claims within the church must also be true. In todays episode, Scott explains why this line of reasoning uses the hasty generalization fallacy to prove that the church is true.

Scot saying that the Book of Mormon is true and then saying the church, its truth claims and core beliefs could be false is a silly claim. The keystone of the LDS church truth claims and doctrine, is the Book of Mormon. The truthfulness of the Book of Mormon shows that it was brought forth through the power of God. It shows that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. And the church that God restored through Joseph Smith is lead and guided by God through his prophets’ and leaders. It does not mean that its leaders our without human error but the restored church as a whole will succeed and continue to prevail against antagonist and its core doctrine and beliefs are from God. Joseph brought about the Book of Mormon and God used him to restore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as stated in Doctrine and Covenants. Notice that in Doctrine Covenants only mentions one church it does not mention The Community of Christ the largest break off of the LDS church. It does not mention the FLDS or Strangite church or other obscure breaks offs. It is worth noting that the Community of Christ the largest breakoff of the LDS church. Is part of the evangelical community and to do this they deny unique LDS truth claims and the authenticity of the Book of Mormon. Your views give a lot of leeway for members who may think like you to pick and choose which doctrine and beliefs they choose to follow. Some post Mormons call it being a cafeteria Mormon. Joseph Smith brought about the Book of Mormon and was commanded to restore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If one believes that Book of Mormon is true, one should strive to follow all the core doctrines and beliefs not picking and choosing, according to one’s personal opinion that they find best palatable.
When it comes to polygamy. Polygamy was practiced by Israelites and old testament prophets. God gave the Isrealites rules on how it was to be practiced in the Old testament Deuteronomy 21:15 Exodus 21:10. Deuteronomy 17:17. A Israelite king should not have excessive wives and concubines also stated by Jacob. Jacob condemned the practice of polygamy practiced by Israelite kings and the Nephites at that time. What you conveniently left out from the words of Jacob in the Book of Mormon is this. Jacob states when polygamy should be practiced. 30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed (polygamy); unto me, I will command my people otherwise they shall hearken unto these things. Jacob 2.
In all of your comments you make a number of assumptions about me and my beliefs. I’ll clear the air. I’m an atheist and I do not beleive in any of the truth claims of the LDS church. I don’t tend to argue details. It just doesn’t interest me. In your comment here, you did not address the main thesis of my episode. Asking a question about x does not mean that y is also true. I’m not saying that it can’t also be true, but using x to prove y is a logical fallacy.
Scott in short The Book of Mormon is true that means the Prophet Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God. And the church Joseph Smith was called to restore by God with all its core beliefs and doctrines are from God. These are inextricably linked. To say otherwise makes no sense.
